would you take !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and smash the windows to get the kids out? I mean damn, to get a haircut and leave the kiddos in the car is just stupid as all hell. I am questioning what I would do in this situation. Probably the same thing. Wonder if the cops thought she was punished enough for her stupidity and that is why she isn't charged

Edit: ha I beat the FP to the story by a minute even

Hopefully there's outrage enough that she ends up being charged with reckless endangerment...
I'd have called 911 first, but if the situation seemed dire, breaking into the car was the correct action. Heat stroke is nothing to toy with, and the effects go quickly from bad to worse and can be irreversible.

If the children appeared to be unresponsive or having trouble breathing, I would. But according to the story, the kids were alert and crying, so I'd say the situation wasn't yet dire. At that stage, best to call the police and wait for them. Then the fuzz can make the decision whether to break a window.

I would do this if she left the damned dog in the car, never mind her children.

You know, kids are expensive....

I hate when cops decide someone's been "punished enough" I saw it happen with an old woman who thought her car was in reverse and gunned it, it was in drive and she launched a honda civic through a cinder block wall. No ticket because she was paying for everything. Should she be driving? NO but he decided she was a nice old lady and gave her a break.
I doubt this woman really learned her lesson. I was an advocate against a technology to warn parents of leaving their kids in their cars yesterday because I want parents to be fucking smart enough to get their own kids out of the car. This is just stupidity, she didn't even "forget" them there.

I'd smash the shit out of the windows. I know its sacrilege around here to fuck with somebody's car, but it would be acceptable in this case. If some parent is careless and stupid enough to leave the child in the car, I'm sure as hell smashing the windows!

Hell yes, I would. No hesitation.

This is probably the exact proper strategy. That way the police and EMS would be on the way right away. If the kids are drenched in sweat and seem "foggy headed" pop pop goes the window.

You'd wait until the kids are unresponsive and are having trouble breathing? Little too late by that time. You can't really tell the alertness of a person through a car window, especially if they're crying.

This was in Texas. You get drenched in sweat walking to your car. I the AC was off the kids were probably soaked in sweat. How are supposed to tell if a crying kid is foggy headed through a car window. You going to have them perform cognitive tests as you analyze their mental state through the window?

It depends. If it looks like they'd only been in there for a few minutes, I would first call 911 to get some sort of first responder out who would have the capability of opening the car. This way I avoid getting in trouble, and the proper authorities are there to talk to the parent. Once the call is made I'd go into nearby stores and try to get store management to find the parents (make announcements) to get them to come get the kids out.
However, if it's clear they've been in there are while and are in danger, I'd still call the authorities but I'd tell them I'm breaking the windows, then do it.

I've called security at the local mall to make an announcement and alert authorities to a non-emergency situation (non-911) of two dogs in a car on a 95 degree day while standing by the car trying to figure out what I could use to open the car. After 15 minutes the lady came out and was staring at me so I glared at her. She hurried up and drove away while I yelled "what the fuck?!?" at her.
I have a knife with a glass breaker tip now. JUST IN CASE, YOU KNOW?

You're oversimplifying and completely twisting my words around. Don't wait until the kids are unconscious. Who the hell would do that?
Stay with the car with 911 on the line. Watch the children with a careful eye and engage them. Talk to the operator. Are the police on their way? How close are they? Be alert, be smart, and monitor the situation. Common sense should dictate the rest.

no that's a fair point, giving the temperature at the time. If the AC is off you're right, i'd still have the police/EMS on the way before breaking the window though.

That sounds like exactly how I would handle such a situation. As absolutely mindnumbingly stupid as it is to leave young kids in the car in this kind of weather, it's best to not go around destroying private property unless you're absolutely sure something horrible is going to happen to those kids (or hell, even a pet) if you don't intervene right this moment.
Otherwise, it's best to let the cops break stuff.

Did anybody try going into one of the adjacent shops to locate the parent?

If you're going somewhere, and you have fucking kids, you take your fucking kids.

I leave my dog and/or kids in my Volt all the time, but only for very short trips into a store/drop something off, etc. I would never leave anybody in the car for an extended period.
But - here's the important difference. The Volt can stay "on", I take the keyfob with me and lock the doors when I go. Therefore the A/C stays running and it's quite comfortable inside. It's silent, so there is no indication that anything is different. Also, my kids are 5 and 9 and know how to let themselves out of the car if they need to get out.
I'm thinking about making a sign to stick in the window.

I would. If she lacked the common sense to not do that, I wouldn't bother with the common sense to call the cops.

So, cuts from glass shards are ok? What happened to going into the hair salon and asking for the owner? 911 is the better option. If they were about to suffer from heat stroke, sure.

When visiting my parents, I would take the dogs with me to the store if it was a short trip. My mom's SUV has the code unlock on the door, so I'd leave the engine running and AC on full blast, then lock the doors.
At least with the SUV you know it's running though. Couldn't imagine leaving the Volt running and coming back to a smashed window!

It depends on the situation. I would call the cops, of course, but I would wait by the car, trying to judge if I should break it or not. If I feel they kids are unsafe, I will break the window open.

Talking to an operator while talking to someone and engaging them won't do anything to mitigate the effects of heat stroke. You're not going to be able to properly analyze a crying child through a car window. What is being on the phone with 911 going to do for the kid who's locked in a hot car? Call the EMT's and get the kid out of the car. People's reliance on police to solve problems they encounter boggles my mind sometimes.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 12:51 |

Definitely call EMS so that they're on the way, then break the window. If the car is on and the AC is going, it's more of a neglect issue, not a life threatening issue.

I posted this on the Jez site... I wasn't aware leaving a child in the car unattended for any period of time was ever acceptable? Need to go get a pizza? Be like me and figure out how to hold the kid in 1 hand the pizza in the other and pray that there's a way to get the door to the car open when you get there.

I honestly prefer the smash the window first find the parent second option because leaving kids in a hot car like that is stupid and at the very least the parent deserves a broken window.

yeah, not really for any time. I always bring the kiddos with me unless I need to get out for a minute and can remain in eye contact with them. And only for a minute. That is with 2 of them in car seats.
Wait you can post to Jez?

I live in a state where people leave their kids in hot cars a lot. We also reach temps of 115F on a regular basis during the summer. A cop left his dog in a car and it died a few years ago.

Tennessee just passed a law, protecting a Good Samaritan, allowing them to break the glass.

There were two kids inside of the car, I'm guessing that they were pretty helpless.
